Native Plant Salvage

Pierce County

(Pierce County Native Plant Salvage web site:  www.ssstewardship.org)

Since March of 2002, and thanks to the support of ~50 people, a Pierce County Native Plant Salvage program is in the make and close to a working reality. To date, a proposal has been developed for consideration by agencies of interest within Pierce County. If you or your agency or organization would like to become or remain involved in this effort, please contact Anna Thurston by e-mail or by phone: 253.566.3342.

The Pierce Conservation District has expressed initial interest in leading the Native Plant Salvage program as an expansion of current Stream Team activities. Our contact there, Monty Mahan, is in the process of securing formal recognition of the program from County Executives. You can support this process by contacting the Pierce Conservation District. Written appeals that ask about the status us the program at the same time that you convey your personal support, or the support of your agency or organization will likely offer the best results since they are a solid measure of the community interest. Please send your information requests to:

In particular, the Pierce Conservation District (PCD) is seeking long term partners who are willing to provide financial support for a Pierce County Native Plant Salvage program.  With finances gained from the November 2003 election, PCD has promised to provide an office at the future South Hill facility from which a salvage program would operate. That facility could be in operation as soon as 2005.

Agencies that benefit from the collection and use of native plant materials are invited to consider annual contributions of $1,000 - $5,000. These funds will pay for the staff required to implement plant holding, coordinated plant digging on-going public education, and details that help make a plant salvage program function (web-page, communications to potential salvage providers, tool procurement...).
